These Chinese spareribs are tender, juicy, and delicious. I created this recipe after nothing caught my eye while searching for a good sparerib recipe. I cook the spareribs in a broiler tray in the oven, but they should be fine to cook on a grill.

 


๐Ÿœ Chinese Spareribs – Recipe

๐Ÿ•’ Preparation Time: 15 minutes

๐Ÿณ Cooking Time: 1 hour

๐Ÿฝ️ Serves: 3–4 people


๐Ÿงพ Ingredients

Ingredient Quantity
Pork spareribs 500 g
Soy sauce (light) 2 tbsp
Dark soy sauce 1 tbsp
Hoisin sauce 2 tbsp
Honey (or brown sugar) 1½ tbsp
Rice vinegar (or white vinegar) 1 tbsp
Garlic (minced) 3 cloves
Ginger (grated) 1 tsp
Chinese five-spice powder ½ tsp
Sesame oil 1 tsp
Water or stock ½ cup
Spring onions (for garnish) 2 tbsp
Sesame seeds (optional) 1 tsp

๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍๐Ÿณ Preparation Steps

1. Prepare the Ribs

  • Wash and pat dry the pork spareribs.

  • Cut them into small, manageable pieces.

  • Parboil the ribs in boiling water for 5 minutes to remove impurities.

  • Drain and set aside.


2. Make the Marinade

In a bowl, mix together:

  • Light soy sauce

  • Dark soy sauce

  • Hoisin sauce

  • Honey

  • Vinegar

  • Garlic

  • Ginger

  • Chinese five-spice powder

  • Sesame oil


3. Marinate

  • Add the ribs to the sauce and coat evenly.

  • Marinate for at least 30 minutes (or up to 4 hours in the fridge for deeper flavor).


4. Cook the Ribs

Option 1 – Pan Braising (Traditional method):

  1. Heat a pan or wok, add the marinated ribs with sauce and ½ cup of water/stock.

  2. Cover and simmer on low heat for 40–50 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  3. When the meat becomes tender and the sauce thickens into a sticky glaze, turn off the heat.

Option 2 – Oven-Baked (Healthier version):

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F).

  2. Line a tray with foil and place ribs on a rack.

  3. Bake for 40 minutes, basting with marinade every 10 minutes until golden and sticky.


5. Finish and Serve

  • Garnish with chopped spring onions and toasted sesame seeds.

  • Serve hot with steamed rice or fried rice.


๐ŸŒฟ Tips

  • For a spicier version, add chili sauce or crushed red pepper.

  • You can replace honey with maple syrup or jaggery syrup.

  • Marinating overnight gives richer flavor.
